Healthcare Facilities: Best Practice Applications of HVAC Systems

Course Description

Based on ASHRAE’s publication HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics, this course introduces best practice in healthcare applications. The course covers topics found in Chapters 1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, and 16. Air distribution designs for surgical and patient rooms are a major focus. Various control and energy efficiency techniques for cooling and heating plants are presented along with O&M and other commissioning topics. Smoke control and life safety best practices and application issues finish the course. Instructors

Bob CoxRobert L. Cox, P.E.,  is a registered Professional Engineer with over 27 years of consulting engineering experience primarily focused on engineering for institutional and governmental clients including health care facilities, colleges and universities, and state, local and federal government clients. He has particular experience in energy conservative design for facilities and facilities Commissioning. He graduated with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. Mr. Cox is a Senior Project Manager with Carter Burgess. Mr. Cox has been active in ASHRAE since 1977 holding a variety of local and regional offices. He is currently the Chair of TC 9.8, “Large Building Applications”, the research chair of TC 9.6 “Healthcare Facilities”, and Program Chair of TC 9.7 “Educational Facilities. He was an active member of SP-91, the committee that wrote the “HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics” and was a primary author for several chapters. Mr. Cox has published several papers for ASHRAE and other groups and has given many seminar presentations at ASHRAE meetings. He recently published a paper at the ASHRAE/ASHE IAQ  meeting called “Can Health Care Ventilation Standards be Maintained without Breaking the Operating Budget?”

Michael Sheerin, P.E. , LEED APMichael Sheerin, P.E. , LEED AP, is a Principal and the Director of Healthcare Engineering for TLC Engineering for Architecture, a 440-person MEP/S consulting engineering firm headquartered in Orlando, FL. He is a registered engineer in multiple states and leads a multi-discipline team of over 55 engineers and support staff. He has been solely focused on the design and planning of healthcare facilities for the past 13 years and has particular expertise in infrastructure upgrades and multi-phase/major renovation projects. Mr. Sheerin has a Bachelor of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering from the City College of New York/City University of New York. Mr. Sheerin has been active in ASHRAE since 1992, including leadership positions at the local chapter and at the technical level. He is also an active member of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and serves on the Healthcare Section for NFPA. Mr. Sheerin is currently a member of ASHRAE TC 9.6, Health Care Facilities and is Vice Chair of SP170, “Ventilation Standards For Healthcare Facilities.” He has been an instructor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, College of Engineering, and has been published in a series of articles in Consulting Specifying Engineer magazine.
