Industry News Arizona Solar Power Plant Will Be Among World's Largest PHOENIX—An Arizona utility has announced plans for one of the world’s largest solar facilities—a 280 MW concentrating solar power (CSP) plant about 70 miles (112 km) southwest of Phoenix. The plant uses parabolic mirrors to track the sun and focus solar energy on a heat transfer fluid. Once heated, the liquid converts water into steam, which turns the plant’s turbines. The Solana Generating Station is scheduled to be operational in 2011.

Naturally Ventilated Skyscraper for Moscow MOSCOW—Russia Tower, scheduled to be completed in 2012, is expected to be the tallest building in Europe. It is also expected to be the largest building in the world with a natural ventilation system. It is designed with an "energy cycle" system, which is a hot water circuit that runs through the building distributing energy to regulate temperature and heat water. The building's pyramidal design also maximizes exposure to natural lighting. Additionally, there will be a series of "green skygardens" rising up the core of the building that draw in natural ventilation.

ASHRAE News Wireless Network Addendum Proposed for BACnet® Standard Several proposed addenda would update ASHRAE Standard 135-2004, BACnet®—A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks. Among the addenda recommended for public review is one that would tunnel BACnet over ZigBee wireless networks, which would lead to a reduction in the cost of installation by reducing the amount of wired networking required in a building automation system. Nine additional addenda were discussed by the BACnet Committee during the 2008 Winter meeting. Some are already being prepared for public review.
