Engineers See Bright Future for Solar Power
BOSTON—Solar power use will increase to produce all the energy needs of Earth's people in 20 years, according to a panel of experts convened by the National Association of Engineers to address the 14 "grand challenges of the 21st century," including making solar energy more economical. There is 10,000 times more sunlight than we need to meet 100% of the world's energy needs, said futurist and inventor Ray Kurzweil, a member of the NAE panel, which announced its findings at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

San Francisco Ordinance Would Require LEED® for All Buildings
SAN FRANCISCO—A proposed green building ordinance in San Francisco would require most new commercial and residential high-rises to meet LEED building criteria. If passed the ordinance would impact both public and private sector buildings. San Francisco officials say they want to get tough because the operation and construction of buildings account for half the city's CO2 footprint.

LEED®-Certified Buildings 25% More Energy-Efficient, Says Study

WHITE SALMON, Wash.—LEED®-certified buildings are delivering 25%–30% average energy savings in relation to noncertified buildings, according to a recent report by the New Buildings Institute. The study analyzes measured energy performance for 121 LEED-NC (new construction) buildings. It involved metrics such as energy use intensity, ENERGY STAR® ratings and measured results compared to initial design and baseline modeling.

ASHRAE Urges Tax Credits for Renewable Energy
ASHRAE is a part of 100 business and advocacy groups urging the U.S. Senate to support legislation that extends renewable energy and efficiency tax credits. This coalition membership is part of ASHRAE’s efforts to support the energy tax credit and deduction provisions in legislation. Previous action by ASHRAE’s Washington office has included participation in the Commercial Building Tax Deduction Coalition, a building-industry-focused group, and sending letters of support to Congressional members.

World's Tallest Building Delayed
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—The world's tallest skyscraper, still under under construction, will take longer than planned to finish, its builder said this week. The Burj Dubai's opening was originally planned for the end of this year. The tower currently stands over 1,700 ft (500 m) tall. The state-owned developer Emaar Properties said completion would be postponed until sometime in 2009. It did not give specifics, but local news media said the delay would be four months.

Registration Open for Integrated Building Design Satellite Broadcast/Webcast

Registration is now open at for the free April 16 satellite broadcast and webcast, “Integrated Building Design: Bringing the Pieces Together to Unleash the Power of Teamwork.” This broadcast is intended to explain what members of the building team must do to advance high-performance buildings with improved design, construction and operations processes. The program will take place from 1–4 p.m. EDT.

Temperature & Temperament: A Psychologist Looks at Comfort

As defined by ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-2004, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, thermal comfort is "that condition of mind which expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment and is assessed by subjective evaluation." Here, the author, a noted psychologist, covers several aspects of this definition, such as the thermal environment itself, subjective evaluation, and occupants' condition of mind. This article has earned ASHRAE Journal's "Best Paper" award for 2007.

It features the company's bidirectional cooling technology, which allows for simultaneous cooling of two racks with a single unit. In addition, the unit is designed to maintain three times the kW capacity of a standard rack.
