Industry News Research Shows Growing Interest in Energy Efficiency MILWAUKEE—Concerns about energy security, rising energy costs and climate change are mounting, generating more interest about energy efficiency, a new survey released Monday shows. But that buzz does not always translate into increased investment in energy efficiency. The survey was commissioned by Johnson Controls. Members of the International Facility Management Association and the American Society of Healthcare Engineering were included as survey respondents. Four out of five executives and facility managers responsible for energy decisions forecast energy prices to rise in the coming year, with a consensus that prices will rise by nearly 14%.

Bush Proposes Strategies to Curb GHGs WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. President George W. Bush has set a goal for the United States to stop the growth of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. The strategies he cited in a speech Wednesday included slowing power plant emissions so they peak over the next 10 to 15 years and decline thereafter. He also called for unspecified incentives to accelerate the development and deployment of new technologies.

Las Vegas Resort Becomes World's Largest LEED® Building LAS VEGAS—The Palazzo resort in Las Vegas has become the largest building certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The $1.9-billion, 3,000-room resort is more than four times bigger than any other LEED-certified building, according to USGBC, which gave the building LEED Silver certification earlier this month.

Dallas Approves 'Green' Regulations DALLAS—The Dallas City Council has voted to implement "green" building regulations. Effective Oct. 1, 2009, new buildings less than 50,000 ft2 must use 15% less energy and 20% less water than current Dallas codes mandate. The proposed ordinance states that, effective Oct. 1, 2011, all new Dallas construction must receive certification by the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® program, or similar programs.

HVAC Equipment Shipments Slowing ARLINGTON, Va.—U.S. factory shipments of residential cooling and heating equipment declined in February, compared with the same month in 2007, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps for February were 13% lower than February 2007 total shipments. Other equipment, such as heat pumps, warm air furnaces and water heaters also shipped at slower rates than in February 2007. This follows slight decreases for most equipment types in January.

Feature of the Week Energy Efficiency for Two Canadian Schools By Vasile Minea, Ph.D., Member ASHRAE This article presents case studies of the application of ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems in two secondary schools in Québec with horizontal and vertical ground heat exchangers, respectively. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate GSHP energy performance in a cold climate to promote application of the technology throughout Canadian educational buildings.

Energy Management System From Infor ATLANTA—Infor EAM Asset Sustainability Edition enterprise software measures consumption of energy and monitors emissions. It tracks the consumption of energy and other assets, such as water and gas, in real-time, evaluates the data against user-defined conditions, and alerts users when usage exceeds defined performance thresholds. The software is Web-based and can be hosted on-site or remotely.
