Monday, June 23 2-3:30 p.m. The 2006 Library of the Year, the Salt Lake City Public Library has become one the most popular places in all of Utah. The library features a six-story curving, walkable wall, an atrium bathed in natural light, reading galleries and a 90-foot tall wall of glass featuring views of the Wasatch Mountains. Tour this building with the mechanical engineer who designed it, and learn about the evaporative cooling and underfloor air distribution systems that enhance the mission of this Salt Lake City landmark. Monday, June 23 3:30-5 p.m. The Conference Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located North of Temple Square in Salt Lake City, is the largest auditorium space in the at 1.4 million square feet. It seats 21,000 in the main auditorium. A six-acre alpine garden adorns the roof. The space accommodates stage presentations, choral and orchestral concerts, including performances by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The conference center also features a Schoenstein Organ with 7,700 pipes and 137 ranks. One can imagine the acoustical challenges of creating a space this size with the primary purpose of holding worship services. Tuesday, June 24 1-4:30 p.m. Site of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, tour the bobsled/luge track, featuring a 1,300-ton, 125,000-pound liquid ammonia refrigeration system. One of 14 operating tracks in the world, the design has been incorporated into each succeeding Olympic Games venue. The track incorporates 285,000 feet of 1” pipe in 106 evaporator sections, which stretch 1600 meters. The plant allows North American athletes to train early in the fall season prior to the beginning of World Cup events in Europe. The track can maintain an outdoor iced surface in 75°F ambient conditions. Cost: $39 per person University of Utah – East Campus – High Temperature Hot Water PlantTuesday, June 24 8-9:30 a.m. The East Campus high temperature hot water plant of the Health Sciences Campus at the University of Utah consists of three, 70 million btuh output high temperature, high pressure hot water generators. A fourth generator is being installed as a redundant source of hot water for the expanding medical center. The generators have low NOx burner controls and strict emissions monitoring. Pumping and generator operations are carefully controlled by state-of-the-art direct digital control systems. Cost: $12 per person.
