WASHINGTON, D.C.—Standards and conformity assessment programs are tools that bolster social progress and stimulate worldwide economic development. Standards guide development in areas from air quality to children’s toys and from alternative sources of energy to Internet security.

To recognize the effect of standards on society and the economy, World Standards Day 2007 will be celebrated in Washington, D.C., on October 18. The theme of World Standards Day is Standards and the Global Village. ASHRAE is the 2007 administrating organization.

World Standards Day is cochaired by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The day will kick off with a reception and exhibition at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.
The evening’s festivities will include presentation of the 2007 Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. The award is named after the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce and honors an individual who is dedicated to the promotion of standardization as a key tool in the elimination of global trade barriers. The winners of the 2007 World Standards Day Paper Competition also will be announced.
