Healthcare Facilities: Best Practice HVAC Design Considerations and Criteria
Course Length: 3 hours
Companion Course: Healthcare Facilities: Best Practice Applications of HVAC Systems
Based on the second edition of ASHRAE’s HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics, this course introduces experienced mechanical engineers to the unique requirements of healthcare HVAC design. This course provides an overview of healthcare HVAC systems including the genesis of ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2013, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities. Infection control is highlighted, focusing on the role of HVAC systems, risk management and protecting populations. Air-handling and distribution system specifications are discussed. Life safety is handled in unique ways in hospitals. Smoke and fire dampers, compartments and controls are discussed. Central utility plants for healthcare facilities are described. This Design course concludes with assessing existing HVAC systems and the complexities of designing renovations such as phasing, utility shutdowns, and infection control risk mitigation.
