ASHRAE Remembers Presidential Members

David Butler
   David Butler Sr., P.E., Presidential/Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, died July 31. He was 73. Butler served as the Society’s president in 1989 – 90. His presidential theme emphasized the importance of volunteers inadvancing environmental technology. Butler represented ASHRAE as the lead Society of National Engineers Week in 1990, helping to launch an engineering outreach program to students, Discover “E.” During his presidency, the Society published the 1989 versions of its flagship standards, 90.1 and 62.1.

Walter Spiegel
   Presidential Member Walter F. Spiegel, P.E., Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, died July 18 at the age of 89. He contributed 57 years of service with ASHRAE, having joined the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, an ASHRAE predecessor society, in 1955. Spiegel served as the Society’s president in 1972 – 73. His presidential theme focused on extending all facets of the Society’s activities. Under his leadership, ASHRAE created a five-year fiscal plan to help regulate expenditures in line with forecasted income; and developed a Composite Index of Technical Articles, making it easier for members to locate technical material from various ASHRAE publications.

Young Professionals Sought as Nominees for 'New Faces'

  ASHRAE is seeking nominations for the New Faces of Engineering program. The recognition program, introduced by ASHRAE in 2003, is part of National Engineers Week, Feb. 17 – 23, 2013. New Faces highlights the work of young engineers and its impact on society. ASHRAE members are encouraged to nominate deserving young engineers 30 years of age or younger, as of Dec. 31, 2012. Complete nominations, including a photo, must be submitted to ASHRAE by Friday, Oct. 19. The nominations should try to tie at least one achievement to something the non-engineering community can appreciate.

Students Urged to Apply for 'New Faces: College'
  ASHRAE, along with the National Engineers Week (NEW) Foundation, is seeking applications for New Faces of Engineering: College Edition 2013. New Faces: College Edition is ASHRAE’s legacy project as the chairing society of Engineers Week 2011. The program is in its second year. ASHRAE’s New Face of Engineering will receive a $1,000 scholarship from ASHRAE and have their profile featured on the New Faces of Engineering: College Edition's Facebook page. Students who wish to apply must be a junior or senior (defined as third, fourth or fifth year) ASHRAE member enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Engineering program from an ABET Accredited school with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The application period begins Sept. 18.

Energy Modeling Conference to Cover Key Applications
  ASHRAE’s upcoming Energy Modeling Conference is intended to advance practitioners' ability to more accurately model and simulate building energy use. It will be held Oct. 1–3 in Atlanta. The conference will feature some 40 presentations, keynote speeches, networking and a modeling tools software developer session. The presentations will cover applications such as daylighting, variable refrigerant flow, thermal bridging, labyrinth ventilation systems, ground source heat pumps, dedicated outdoor air systems and hybrid systems.

Scholarship Named in Honor of Lynn Bellenger

  ASHRAE has created a scholarship in memory of Lynn G. Bellenger, P.E., Presidential/Fellow Member ASHRAE, for the 2013–14 school year. The one-year, $5,000 Lynn G. Bellenger Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving female undergraduate engineering student pursuing a degree in a field related to HVAC&R. Bellenger served as ASHRAE’s president during the 2010–11 Society year and was ASHRAE’s first woman president in its 116-year history. She died in 2011. Said ASHRAE President Tom Watson: “Through this scholarship we hope to build upon her legacy by encouraging students to pursue excellence in the field of engineering, just as she did."
