ASHRAE/IES Publish First Standard on Commissioning Process
Standard 202-2013

A newly published standard focusing on the commissioning process is intended to help ensure a fully functional, fine-tuned facility. ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 202, Commissioning Process for Buildings and Systems, identifies the minimum acceptable commissioning process for buildings and systems as described in ASHRAE’s Guideline 0-2005, The Commissioning Process. The standard defines the commissioning process through 13 functional steps, each of which contains deliverables.

Registration Open for 2014 Winter Conference
Attendees can learn about the latest industry practices, network, and earn professional credits and ASHRAE certifications at ASHRAE’s 2014 Winter Conference on Jan. 18–22 in New York. New York City’s iconic skyline serves as the backdrop for the 2014 ASHRAE Winter Conference. Since New York is one of the world’s top cities for most skyscrapers—with nearly 600—it’s appropriate that the Conference puts a special focus on the design, development and operation of tall buildings. The Technical Program will run from Jan 19–22. It features eight tracks with a building-oriented theme. Tracks include "Tall Buildings," "Building Information Systems," and "Building Performance and Commissioning." Early bird registration is open until Nov. 3, 2013.

Papers Sought for High-Performance Buildings Conference
Presenters and posters are being sought for the 2014 ASHRAE High Performance Buildings Conference. Abstracts for presentations are due Oct. 25, while poster PDFs are due Feb. 21, 2014. The Conference program will have a mix of invited speakers and a call for presenters. In addition, there will be a poster session on "Measured Building Performance" and "Modeled Building Performance." The conference will be held April 7–8 in San Francisco.

Colombia Hosts Successful Certification Exam
Colombian HVAC&R professionals gather for ASHRAE certification exam.

CARTAGENA DE INDIAS, Colombia—The largest special administration of ASHRAE certifications held outside of the United States recently was held in Colombia. Thirty candidates for all six ASHRAE certifications were tested at the XII CIAR in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on July 23. ACAIRE, the principal organizer of the 2013 CIAR conference, and ASHRAE, a sponsor, partnered to make the certification exams available.

Students Sought for New Face of Engineering: College Edition
ASHRAE, along with the National Engineers Week (NEW) Foundation, is now searching for the next New Face of Engineering: College Edition for 2014. The program is ASHRAE’s legacy project as the chairing society of Engineers Week 2011. ASHRAE’s collegiate New Face of Engineering will receive a $1,000 scholarship and be featured in an ad in ASHRAE Journal. The winner's profile also will be posted on the New Faces of Engineering: College Edition's Facebook page and the award can be included on resumes and job applications. "The more time you put into becoming involved you will receive back at least two-fold," said 2013 New Face of Engineering: College Edition student Paul Brockmann. Applications are being accepted until Nov. 15 at the New Faces of Engineering: College Edition Facebook page.

ASHRAE Awards More Than $100,000 in Scholarships
ASHRAE has awarded $106,000 in scholarship money for the 2013–2014 academic year. The scholarships, as much as $10,000 for one year, are meant to encourage students to pursue HVAC&R disciplines and to use that knowledge to benefit society as a whole. Over the course of 24 years ASHRAE has awarded over $1.3 million to approximately 275 undergraduate and graduate students. Applications are now being accepted for 2014–15 undergraduate, regional/chapter and university-specific scholarships. The deadline is Dec. 1, 2013.

First New Chapter Chartered in U.S. in More Than 20 Years

  The first charter awarded to a chapter in the United States since 1992 was presented to the newly established West Virginia Chapter during the Region VIII Chapters Regional Conference in August. The event took place in Louisville, Ky. Shown (from left) are  Jeff Gatlin, Region VII director and regional chair;  Todd Zachwieja, chapter president; Art Hallstrom, a member of the West Virginia Chapter, and David Underwood, Society treasurer. The last active chapter chartered in the United States was Cedar Valley Chapter on April 13, 1992.
