ASHRAE Members are Recognized for their Outstanding Accomplishments

ATLANTA (June 23, 2024) – ASHRAE recognized the contributions of members to the Society and the built environment industry during an Honors and Awards program at the 2024 Annual Conference in Indianapolis.

"We are excited to honor this year’s ASHRAE award recipients for their outstanding contributions," said 2023-24 ASHRAE President Ginger Scoggins, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE. "Their dedication and innovation embody ASHRAE’s mission of advancing sustainable and comfortable building practices. Congratulations to all and thank you for your significant impact on our industry."

A list of the awards and recipients are below:

Lincoln Bouillon Award
M. ERSHED Jaman Khan, CHD, received the Lincoln Bouillon Award, which recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing membership. The award commemorates Presidential Member Bouillon’s efforts in recruiting new members. Khan is CEO and Chief Designer, Electro-Mechanical Control Services (eMcS), Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Dan Mills Chapter Programs Award
Barry Lau received the Dan Mills Chapter Programs Award, which recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors. Lau is Head of Building Services, Swire Properties Limited, Hong Kong.

William J. Collins, Jr. RP Award
Tiffany Bates Abruzzo received the William J. Collins Jr., RP Award. The award, named in honor of Presidential Member Collins, recognizes a chapter RP chair who excels in raising funds for ASHRAE’s RP campaign. Abruzzo is Director of Engineering Sales, Envirosep, Georgetown, South Carolina.

Government Affairs Award
Mario Henrique Canale received the Government Affairs Award. The award recognizes individuals for outstanding effort and achievement in state, provincial and local government activities in connection with technical issues related to the Society. Canale is CEO, Aeris Qualidade do Ar, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.

Donald Bahnfleth Environmental Health Award
Lan Chi Nguyen Weekes received the Donald Bahnfleth Environmental Health Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on environmental health issues. Weekes is Director – Facilities and Protection Services, La Cité College, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Homer Addams Award
Apoorv Khanuja, Ph.D., received the Homer Addams Award, which recognizes a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project at a university that has graduate programs in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and has achieved a high standard of performance in this work. Khanuja is a Data Analyst II, kW Engineering, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Standards Achievement Award
Marwa Zaatari, Ph.D. and William P. Bahnfleth, Ph.D., P.E., Presidential Fellow Life Member received the Standards Achievement Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service for developing ASHRAE standards and guidelines. Zaatari is Chief Science Officer, D Zine Partners, Austin, Texas. Bahnfleth is Professor of Architectural Engineering, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania.

YEA Award of Individual Excellence
Alekhya Kaianathbhatta, Mohammed Murtaza and Michelle Shadpour received the YEA Award of Individual Excellence, which recognizes YEA members for superior efforts during the preceding Society year in the promotion and success of YEA and its programs. Kaianathbhatta is a Senior Commissioning Specialist, The HIDI Group, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Murtaza is an MEP Engineer, Cubic Engineering Consultancy, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Shadpour is a Project Manager, SC Engineers, San Diego, California.

 ASHRAE Journal Paper Award
Austin Barolin and Travis English, P.E. received the Journal Paper Award for the article, “Air Quality-Based Ventilation for Hospital Energy Conservation,” judged to be the best article published in ASHRAE Journal.

 Barolin is a Senior Energy and Decarbonization Analyst, Mazzetti, San Francisco, California. English is Director of Engineering, Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, California.

Science and Technology for the Built Environment Best Paper Award
Parveen Dhillon, Ph.D., Li Cheng, W. Travis Horton and Jim Braun, Fellow Life Member were recipients of the Science and Technology for the Built Environment Best Paper Award for “Laboratory load-based testing and performance rating of residential heat pumps in heating mode.” The award is for the best paper published in the volume year of the Science and Technology for the Built Environment, the ASHRAE research journal.

Dhillion is a Researcher, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, Colorado. Cheng Is a Research Assistant; Horton is a Professor of Civil Engineering; Braun is a Herrick Professor of Engineering and Director of the Center for High Performance Buildings, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

Crosby Field Award
Zhelun Chen, Yicheng Li, Ph.D., Jin Wen, Fellow Member, Amanda Pertzborn, Ph.D., Vance Payne, L. James Lo, Gabe Grajewski, Zheng O'Neill, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow Member and Steven T. Bushby, Fellow Life Member were the recipients of the Crosby Field Award for “A Simulation Framework for Analyzing the Impact of Stochastic Occupant Behaviors on Demand Flexibility in Typical Commercial Buildings,” which was judged to be the best paper presented before the Society. The Crosby Field Award is named for a former Presidential Member.

Chen is a Research Scientist; Li is a Ph.D. Student; Wen is a Professor; Lo is an Associate Professor and Grajewski is a Ph.D. Candidate, Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pertzborn is a Mechanical Engineer; Payne is a Mechanical Engineer, HVAC&R Performance Group, Energy and Environment Division (EED) of the Engineering Laboratory (EL); Bushby is an Electronics Engineer, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, Maryland. O’Neill is an Associate Professor, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas.

Willis H. Carrier Award
Elence Xinzhu Chen, received the Willis H. Carrier Award given to a member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at a Society conference. The award is presented for “Ensembled Deep Learning-Based Model Predictive Control for Automatic Window Operations in Winter.” Chen is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Instructor in Architecture, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

ASHRAE Best Paper Award
The following papers received a Best Paper Award, which recognizes the authors of the best papers presented at Society conferences:

  • Jerry Lilly, Life Member received an award for “Calculating Breakout from HVAC Ductwork.” Lilly is President, JGL Acoustics, Inc., Issaquah, Washington.
  • Carlos Duarte Roa, Paul Raftery, Anand Prakash and Therese E. Peffer, Ph.D. received an award for “Field Demonstration of the Brick Ontology to Scale up the Deployment of Ashrae Guideline 36 Control Sequences.” Roa is an Assistant Professor and Researcher; Raftery is a Professional Researcher, University of California, Berkeley Center for the Built Environment, Berkeley, California. Prakash is a Senior Scientific Engineering Associate, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California. Aldykiewicz, Jr. received an award for “Data Acquisition System Selection and Calibration of Resistive Moisture Content Measurements for Large-Scale Field Studies in Cold Climate Residential Building Envelope Performance.” Evren works for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Washington. Mosiman is a Senior Research Fellow, University of Minnesota Center for Sustainable Building Research, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Huelman is an Associate Professor, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota. Poster Presentation Award

The Poster Presentation Award recognizes the authors of the best poster session paper presented at a Society conference during the previous year.

  • Nour Youssef and Katherine D'Avignon received an award for “Investigation into the Pertinence of Using Child-Specific Radiation Data for Thermal Comfort Calculations.” Yossef is a Doctoral Student; D’Avignon is an Associate Professor, École de technologie supérieure, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Eunice Foote Decarbonization Award
Paul A. Torcellini, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow Member, received the Eunice Foote Decarbonization Award which recognizes a member who works to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment. Torcellini is a Principal Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, Colorado.

 

Louise & Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award
Chandra Sekhar, Fellow Member, received the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award. This annual award is given to an ASHRAE Fellow for continuous preeminence in engineering or research work. The honor was initiated in 1979 by Presidential Member Bill Holladay. Sekar is a Professor, Program Director MSc (Building Performance and Sustainability), Department of the Built Environment, National University of Singapore, Singapore.
