Course Description: Introduction to Building Decarbonization demystifies the primary sources of carbon emissions in buildings and explains the key drivers for decarbonization. The course focuses on the framework of decarbonization—including key definitions and distinct scopes that drive sustainable practices. Learn about ASHRAE's role in disseminating vital decarbonization insights, emphasizing the urgency of combatting climate change, and pinpointing any given building’s substantial contribution to energy-related carbon emissions. ASHRAE is actively engaging with international organizations to make the decarbonization technical tools, training, standards, and research available to a global audience.

The course explores the complexities of building carbon emissions, including on-site combustion, construction-related sources, and refrigerant leakage. Other covered topics include the principles of building decarbonization, harmonizing occupant well-being, environmental stewardship, and the nature of direct and indirect emissions. The course concludes on the topic of sustainable building innovation—setting a foundation of best practices for a decarbonizing HVAC&R industry.

Course Instructor: Dr. Drury B. Crawley, Ph.D., AIA, Fellow ASHRAE, BEMP is a Bentley Fellow and Director of Building Performance Research with Bentley Systems Inc., focusing on building performance, decarbonization, zero-energy buildings, sustainability, and smart cities. With more than 45 years of experience in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability, Dr. Crawley has worked in engineering software development, government research, and standards development organizations, as well as building design and energy consulting companies.

Dr. Crawley is active in ASHRAE (Director-At-Large on ASHRAE Board, member of Task Force on Building Decarbonization, and member of multiple standards and technical committees). He was elevated to ASHRAE Fellow in 2009 and is also active in the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA President from 2020-2022, Fellow in 2012). He achieved ASHRAE BEMP certification in October 2012, and is the recipient of the ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award (2013), Service to ASHRAE Research Award (2012), Distinguished Service Award (2003), and Symposium Best Paper Award (1999) for “Which Weather Data Should You Use for Energy Simulations of Commercial Buildings?”
