My career in the HVAC industry started in 1982 in Daikin Europe NV, a small company with 87 people. Graduated as Master of Science (Electrics/Electronics) it was clear that an additional graduation for refrigeration and air-conditioning would be most helpful to create opportunities. As the company was growing, our R&D department was growing. Both from the company side as well from the society new opportunities and challenges were coming. On the way to a unified European Market, safety regulations and standards were booming at the beginning of the 90’s. Beginning the 21st century the focus of European regulations was moving from safety towards the environment. On global level IPCC, where I joined as lead author, made the Special report on safeguarding the ozone layer and global climate system. Later, I joined the Refrigerant technical option committee (RTOC) of the UNEP preparing regular reports about refrigerants for HACR and followed all the Montreal Protocol activities. In 2006 Daikin Europe NV appointed me to lead the newly established ‘environment research center’. Gradually I became a ‘poli-technical’ manager, leading a team with expertise to connect politics and technics. Joining ASHRAE in 1997 was most helpful to understand the US situation and to advice Daikin US for environmental related aspects. Growing with the company was a big opportunity but also a big challenge. Meanwhile we are more than 11 thousand people in Daikin Europe NV., a part of Daikin Industries Ltd., with around 100 thousand people worldwide. I thank my wife and family who always supported me on this challenging journey.
