Selection Process:
The ASHRAE Society Scholarship Program has two deadlines of December 1st and May 1st. Both deadlines are for a different set of scholarships but are for the same awarded year. Those selected to receive a scholarship will be notified and awarded at the beginning of the following fall semester. (Example: Deadline: December 1, 2020 and May 1, 2021: the scholarship is awarded for Fall 2021-Spring 2022).
Re-applications will be accepted from former scholarship applicants/recipients for some scholarships provided they meet current scholarship criteria. Students may only receive one Society scholarship in any given year. Scholarship amounts awarded shall not exceed the direct annual cost of attending the educational institution (i.e. tuition, books, supplies, room and board, etc.) through graduation.
- A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30% evidenced by an official transcript of grades or written statement from a school administrator.
- Three letters of recommendation, following the criteria below:
- From an instructor or faculty advisor.
- From a current or past employer.
- From a character reference.
*In the case of schools with an ASHRAE student branch, a letter from the faculty advisor of that branch may be one of the three letters of recommendation. Visit ashrae.org/communities/student-zone/student-branches for a list of ASHRAE student branches.
- Potential service to the HVAC and/or refrigeration profession.
- Financial need.
- Excellence, Character, Leadership qualities.
- Service to the community & others, and/or extracurricular activities. This can include participation in the arts, music, athletics, volunteerism, environmental/humanitarian groups, or other service organizations

Top Ten Tips for ASHRAE Scholarship Applicants
- Become an ASHRAE student member. Though not required for scholarship eligibility, a student membership will provide you with valuable resources, opportunities, and connections that will help you in your chosen career path.
- Read the application carefully and answer all questions completely and honestly.
- Make sure you meet all the criteria.
- Make sure you submit the application and all required documents on or before the applicable deadline.
- Use proper English (correct grammar and spelling) when completing the application.
- Make sure your application, if typed or handwritten, is NEAT and legible.
- Submit a brief, non-required introductory cover letter.
- Be clear and thorough when stating goals, financial need and answering essay questions..
- Learn about the Society by contacting the nearest local ASHRAE chapter in your area and to find out if your school has a student branch on campus.
