Artificial intelligence (AI) policy: ASHRAE prohibits the entry of content from any ASHRAE publication or related ASHRAE intellectual property (IP) into any AI tool, including but not limited to ChatGPT. Additionally, creating derivative works of ASHRAE IP using AI is also prohibited without express written permission from ASHRAE.

Approved Motions for Chicago Board of Directors Meeting

 

ASHRAE’s Board of Directors met in January during the 2018 ASHRAE Winter Conference in Chicago. The following motions were approved by the Board:

  • a memorandum of understanding between the Associazione Italiana Condizionamento dell’Aria Riscaldamento Refrigerazione (AiCARR) and ASHRAE.
  • the allocation of $25,000 from the fiscal year 2017–2018 Opportunity Fund to FedEx Handbooks to all countries outside the U.S., Canada and Europe in June 2018.
  • the issues and strategies presented by the Ethics Enforcement Performance Review Task Group.
  • to include diversity as one of the Society’s core values.
  • to develop a diversity and inclusion policy.
  • amend the Rules of the Board for the Grassroots Advocacy Committee such as:
    • At least one of the chair, vice chair, subcommittee chairs, or the communications coordinator should be from a non-U.S. governed state or territory.
    • The chair of the committee shall have ASHRAE Executive Committee experience.
    • The vice chair shall have ASHRAE Executive Committee experience. 
    • One at-large member shall have professional background in government affairs or advocacy.  At least one at-large member shall be a Presidential Member.
  • join the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance.
  • the following changes to the Certification Committee section of the Rules of the Board:
    • the committee will include 11 voting members, with a chair and two vice chairs who shall hold the grade of Member or higher in the Society.
  • the following publications:
    • BSR/ASHRAE Addendum d to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2016, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality. The addendum deletes Informative Appendix D, Rationale for Minimum Physiological Requirements for Respiration Air Based on CO2 Concentration.
    • BSR/ASHRAE Addenda h, j and m to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.2, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Residential Buildings. Addendum h provides an alternative compliance pathway for compartmentalization. Addendum j allows existing buildings to use a branch-circuit overcurrent device. Addendum m is calculation of floor area.
    • BSR/ASHRAE/ICC/USGBC/IES Addendum ar to ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1-2014, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The addendum adds a third performance criteria to Section 7.5.2.
    • BSR/ASHRAE/ASHE Addendum n to ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2017, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities. The addendum reorganizes the standard into three sections.
  • cosponsor Standard for Restoration of Buildings Impacted by Combustion Particles, with Restoration Industry Association (RIA) and the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) with ASHRAE as the lead organization.
  • the revisions to the Procedures for ASHRAE Standards Actions (PASA).
  • revising 3.2.4 of the Scholarship Guidelines that all funds for scholarships shall be invested separately from other ASHRAE investments and shall be deposited in an ASHRAE Foundation headquarters interest bearing account. Separate accounting records shall be maintained for each scholarship fund.

Approved Motions for November Board of Directors Meeting

 

ASHRAE’s Board of Directors met in November. The following motions were approved by the Board:

  • ASHRAE discontinue its role as a partner in the joint development of ICC/ASHRAE 700, National Green Building Standard.
  • Initiate a new Guideline Project Committee with ASHRAE Standing Standard Project Committee 300, Commissioning.
    •    The new GPC is called Commissioning of Data Centers and is meant to provide technical support for the application of the commissioning process to data centers; assist in the application of ASHRAE Guideline 0 or ASHRAE Standard 202 to data centers; address commissioning process issues that are particular to data centers and provide technical support for the commissioning of data centers.
    • The GPC is intended for use with new and existing buildings and applies to data center support infrastructure, but not to data equipment networks.
  • Establish a Developing Leader Award to recognize new members who have shown a diverse involvement and commitment to ASHRAE within five years of joining as an associate member.
  • Convert the Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) committee to a Grassroots Committee, effective July 1. Several committee leadership changes were approved for the conversion.
  • Change a rule of the board when considering approval of any Society honors or awards submitted posthumously, other than the Hall of Fame and Pioneers of the Industry.
    •    The family of the deceased award recipient will be notified after the meeting at which the award would have been presented and the award will be sent to them in the following situations:
      •    If the nominee’s death occurs after the nomination was submitted to the Honors & Awards Committee, it will be awarded posthumously if approved.
      • If the H&A Committee learns of the nominee’s death occurring before the nomination was submitted but after the Board and/or Members Council has voted approval, it will be awarded posthumously.
    •    If the nominee is known to be deceased before the nomination is submitted or if the H&A Committee learns that the nominee’s death preceded the submission of the nomination prior to the Board and/or Members Council voting on the award, the nomination will be returned with an appropriate explanation of the reason in the notification to the nominee’s sponsor.
  • Approve a proposed due increase for Society Year 2018–2019, using the 2016 Consumer Price Index, in accordance with the Finance Committee Reference Manual. Main dues will increase from $206 to $209 this coming year.
  • Budget 6% of the Research Reserve Fund portfolio value as income for Society Year 2017–2018. The traditional research reserve fund transfer of 4% was increased to 6% to clear a backlog of research projects.
  • Support the Presidents Scholarship by contributing a matching grant of $45,000 from the ASHRAE Reserve Fund to provide an incentive to all membership to support this premiere Society scholarship.
  • Observe the passing of Damon Gowan with great sorrow.
