Course Length: 3 hours
As the world considers when and how to reopen occupiable spaces, college and university owners, facility managers, and resiliency planning teams are confronting how to become conscious of the required transformations for their buildings and the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems serving these facilities. The pandemic has exposed existing vulnerabilities in the design, construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of systems installed in many building types, and these systems need to be analyzed for potential improvements. Infectious diseases may be spread by several different routes, including through the air. The spread of viruses may be accelerated or decreased by heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. At this time, expert positions indicate that ventilation, filtration, and air cleaning provided by HVAC systems can reduce the airborne concentration of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, and thus the risk of transmission through the air.
This course expounds the online ASHRAE COVID-19 details and addresses typical issues you would find in reopening universities and office buildings. The course also provides guidance on creating a Building Readiness Plan for HVAC systems for the two building types. The expansion of details discussed in this course will help reiterate the fact that there are mitigation strategies available and help you understand what a fit for your building is, its systems specific arrangement and your needs.
