    Cancellation Policy

    Registration fees will be refunded in full if cancellation is received by ASHRAE Learning Institute at least 30 days prior to the training date. Cancellations received 15–29 days prior to the training date are subject to a $150 cancellation fee. Registrants who do not attend the training or who cancel less than 15 days prior to the training date are liable for the entire registration fee. A substitute registrant may be enrolled at any time by contacting Tewana Parris at tparris@ashrae.org, or by phone at 678-539-2121. Member/Non-Member rates will apply to the substitute registrant.

    HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials

    ASHRAE’s HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials training provides participants with instruction that accelerates their transformation into effective members of a design, construction or facilities maintenance team. Developed by industry-leading professionals selected by ASHRAE, the training provides attendees with the fundamentals and technical aspects of HVAC design. Attendees will gain practical skills and knowledge to design and maintain HVAC systems that can be put to immediate use.

    In addition to gaining in-depth knowledge and understanding, attendees will receive real-world examples of HVAC systems based on the renovated ASHRAE Headquarters building. The training also teaches a systematic approach to guide a design team to a solution that optimally meets the client’s expectations. Engineered drawings of the ASHRAE Headquarters renovation will also be discussed so participants are exposed to plan reading and visual understanding of system design.

    • Engineers new to the HVAC industry, including recent engineering graduates lacking practical experience

    Joel Primeau, Eng., ASHRAE Member, HBDP, LEED® AP

    Joel Primeau, P.Eng., ASHRAE Member, HBDP, LEED®AP, is a consulting engineer with over 30 years of HVAC experience. He has led and assisted teams of engineers and technicians in the design and construction of high-performance, sustainable facilities.

    Primeau’s experience spans a wide range of engineering design and construction projects. His expertise is in the design of high-efficiency HVAC systems that enhance indoor air quality and comfort. Primeau frequently trains engineers, architects, and facility managers on the design process, central heating and chilling plant optimization, high-performance HVAC systems, and heat recovery applications.

    Primeau earned a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON, Canada. After a brief career as an army engineer, Primeau has since worked in the HVAC industry in consulting, facilities management, and technical sales.

    Dennis Wessel, P.E., Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, LEED® AP

    Dennis Wessel, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, retired as a senior vice president and director of marketing with Karpinski Engineering and has more than 45 years of consulting engineering experience.  Mr. Wessel was an ASHRAE Director-At-Large (2012-2015) and past Chair of the Planning Committee, Conferences and Expositions Committee and Handbook Committee. He has been a member of the Technical Activities Committee and was past Chair of both TC 9.1 Large Building HVAC Systems and TC 9.12 Tall Buildings.

    He is currently a member of the ASHRAE Foundation, Development Committee, Nominating Committee, Chair of the Life Members Club and is liaison to the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).  Mr. Wessel received ASHRAE's Distinguished Service and Exceptional Service Awards and was named Outstanding Engineering Alumni 2004 by Cleveland State University and Engineer of the Year 2003 by the Cleveland Technical Society Committee.
