Registration Fees

Fee Covers: Course admittance, course materials, publications, break refreshments, and lunches.

Company Discount Fee: Enroll 3 or more participants from the same company at the same time and save. Email Tewana Parris, Professional Development Coordinator at tparris@ashrae.org for group registration assistance.

Cancellation Policy

Registration fees will be refunded in full if cancellation is received by ASHRAE Learning Institute at least 30 days prior to the training date. Cancellations received 15–29 days prior to the training date are subject to a $150 cancellation fee. Registrants who do not attend the training or who cancel less than 15 days prior to the training date are liable for the entire registration fee. A substitute registrant may be enrolled at any time by contacting Tewana Parris at tparris@ashrae.org, or by phone at 678-539-2121. Member/Non-Member rates will apply to the substitute registrant.

HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials

ASHRAE’s HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials training provides participants with instruction that accelerates their transformation into effective members of a design, construction or facilities maintenance team. Developed by industry-leading professionals selected by ASHRAE, the training provides attendees with the fundamentals and technical aspects of HVAC design. Attendees will gain practical skills and knowledge to design and maintain HVAC systems that can be put to immediate use.

In addition to gaining in-depth knowledge and understanding, attendees will receive real-world examples of HVAC systems based on the renovated ASHRAE Headquarters building. The training also teaches a systematic approach to guide a design team to a solution that optimally meets the client’s expectations. Engineered drawings of the ASHRAE Headquarters renovation will also be discussed so participants are exposed to plan reading and visual understanding of system design.

• Engineers new to the HVAC industry, including recent engineering graduates lacking practical experience

PDH and Continuing Education Units

ASHRAE is an approved Continuing Education provider for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a USGBC Education Partner. Continuing Education hours earned from ASHRAE courses may be applied toward renewal of state-licensed professionals and maintenance of LEED^® professional credentials.

Attendees of HVAC Design: Level I will earn up to 18 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).

HVAC Design: Level II – Applications

ASHRAE’s HVAC Design: Level II – Applications training provides participants with instruction on HVAC system design. The training is tailored for engineers with advanced experience in the HVAC design field, or those who have completed HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials. Developed by industry-leading professionals, the training provides advanced information that allows practicing engineers and designers an opportunity to expand their exposure to HVAC systems design procedures for a better understanding of system options to save energy.

Who Should Attend

• Engineers with HVAC design experience (3–10 years)
• Participants who attended the HVAC Design: Level I – Essentials
• Architects who want an in-depth understanding of HVAC design
• Facilities managers involved in new construction or major renovation projects
• Technicians who would like to gain thorough design knowledge
• Construction project managers involved with mechanical systems

How Your Firm Will Benefit

The training allows practicing engineers and designers the opportunity to refresh their skills, as well as, expand their exposure to systems and design procedures. Attendees not practicing as designers will be provided with insights into the design process and challenges along with a better understanding of HVAC system options with buildings.

Julia Keen, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, HBDP

Julia Keen is a professor of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science at Kansas State University with a specialty in HVAC, energy codes, and integrated building design. She has a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Kansas State University, where she also received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architectural Engineering. She owns her own consulting engineering company, Keen Designs, PA. Dr. Keen has an ASHRAE High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certification. She currently serves on ASHRAE's Finance Committee and PEAC.

Dennis Wessel, P.E., Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE, LEED^® AP

Dennis Wessel, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, retired as a senior vice president and director of marketing with Karpinski Engineering and has more than 45 years of consulting engineering experience.  Mr. Wessel was an ASHRAE Director-At-Large (2012-2015) and past Chair of the Planning Committee, Conferences and Expositions Committee and Handbook Committee. He has been a member of the Technical Activities Committee and was past Chair of both TC 9.1 Large Building HVAC Systems and TC 9.12 Tall Buildings.

He is currently a member of the ASHRAE Foundation, Development Committee, Nominating Committee, Chair of the Life Members Club and is liaison to the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).  Mr. Wessel received ASHRAE's Distinguished Service and Exceptional Service Awards and was named Outstanding Engineering Alumni 2004 by Cleveland State University and Engineer of the Year 2003 by the Cleveland Technical Society Committee.
